Short excerpt - a reminder to revisit old places, perspectives, and when allowed time beauty will continue to emerge even when seemingly tapped out.
I found this artist interplay inspiring today so I thought Iâd share. :)
A life
Hokusai (1760-1849)
Most famous for his The Great Wave off Kanagawa piece seen across popular media. Hokusai practiced ukiyo-e type art and was distinguished in his proficiency in woodblock printing. Read more, Hokusai.
Many accredit his work for influencing the impressionist of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
CĂ©zanne (1839-1906)
One of those artists influenced by Hokusai was Paul CĂ©zanna. Living in the Golden Era of Paris or the âBelle Ăpoqueâ (Beautiful Epoch), right at the edge of WW1 and between wars. Europe was blooming in an awkward period of peace.
Influencing the avant-garde art of today he had a hand in cubist (geometric cube-based art) and fauvist (distinct brush strokes and bold colors) art revolutions. Read more, CĂ©zanne.
âCĂ©zanne was my one and only master (âŠ) He was like the father of us allâ - Pablo Picasso
Challenging a perspective
Beauty in repetition
Attention span, âthe next big thingâ, and mimetics :) make us crave and move on.
Blame it on the times, life circumstances, or human nature. Regardless of the excuse, we canât seem to commit, slow down, and look up. There is a simple beauty in doing things over and over again. In a physical space, we can enjoy more details - whenever I come home I run the same hills and never fail to enjoy something new: the scents, flowers, grass, and animals are always different.
Sometimes, that spell of peace and consistency we desire so deeply is right in front of us. Donât discount the nice things in proximity.
East + West
It goes to show how some of the greatest artists of history from opposite sides of the planet, in contrasting cultures, find pleasure in the same task.
Hokusaiâs 36 Views of Mount Fuji - then 100 Views of Mount Fuji, and CĂ©zannaâs estimated 60 paintings of Mont Sainte-Victoire. A ritualistic, assumingly meditative practice of adding, removing, and iterating on the same thing. Honing the ability in seeing something from different angles over time shared with different people or fauna.
To iterate on the same thing, the essentials of building products and refining oneself.
